 "The Lotus Seed."
In this poem, the author tells a story about her grandmother, Bà. When Bà was a young girl in Vietnam, she wanted something to remind her of Vietnam’s last emperor, so she took a lotus seed from the Imperial garden. She treasured this seed and kept it for good luck. During the Vietnam War, Bà and her children left
their country to go the United States. Bà took the lotus seed with her. Years later, Bà’s grandson took the seed without asking and planted it in the family’s garden. When she learned what happened, Bà cried and cried. The following spring, however, Bà discovered a beautiful lotus flower blooming in their pond. She later gave everyone in the family one of its lotus seeds to remember each other by.



Literary Words
speaker: The speaker of a poem is the imaginary character, or voice, a
poet uses when writing a poem. This voice is the one you “hear”
when you read the poem. This speaker is often not identified by
name.

symbol: is anything that stands for or represents something else. In
addition to having its own meaning, a symbol stands for something
other than itself, often an idea or a feeling.

removed = took something away from where it was ➡ When it was time to eat, I removed the vase
from the table.
source = where something comes from ➡ Rose hips, or the fruit of roses, are a good source of vitamin C

a feeling ➡ To many people, yellow roses symbolize friendship.

Adverb Clauses of Time
Adverb clauses of time express when. The adverbs when and whenever both express when, but they have different meanings. When refers to an event that happened once. Whenever refers to an event that
happened many times.

An adverb clause is a dependent clause. It can come before or after a main clause. When an adverb clause comes before the main clause, use a comma to separate the two.
